RFK Jr. claims cyclosporiasis outbreak is under control with 1,600 cases reported

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that the multi-state cyclosporiasis outbreak in the U.S. is “under control.” This statement follows an investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and local health authorities into the outbreak, which has affected at least 1,600 individuals across five states. The CDC and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have traced the source of the outbreak to shredded iceberg lettuce from certain Taco Bell locations, supplied by Taylor Farms and sourced from central Mexico. In response, Taylor Farms has issued a recall of numerous lettuce products across 27 states and will cease sourcing iceberg lettuce from central Mexico for the remainder of the growing season. Although an initial FDA test indicated a positive result for contamination, it was later clarified as a false positive. Health officials continue to investigate additional cases and potential sources of infection in 29 other states.

Why It Matters

The ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak highlights significant concerns regarding food safety and public health protocols in the U.S. The CDC’s decision to end mandatory reporting of the parasite responsible for cyclosporiasis has drawn criticism from lawmakers, who argue it undermines food safety. Previously, the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) monitored a range of foodborne illnesses, representing a substantial portion of the U.S. population. The cessation of mandatory reporting for this parasite could impact the early detection and management of similar outbreaks, raising questions about the adequacy of federal food safety measures and the effectiveness of current surveillance systems.
