A Ravenair pilot sparked attention by skywriting the phrase “I’m bored” during a test flight over the England-Wales border. The message was tracked on Flightradar24 as the aircraft took off from Liverpool and navigated various locations, including Southport and the Dee Estuary, over a two-hour period. The pilot, a flying instructor in his 20s, spent approximately 20 minutes creating the message at an altitude of around 1,100 feet and speeds just below 100 knots. Although the flight route was not officially authorized, the airline’s operations manager noted the pilot’s flying skills and stated he would not face any disciplinary action. The flight was necessary to test a recent aircraft repair, and the pilot is now on his day off following the flight.

Why It Matters

Skywriting is a rare phenomenon that captures public interest and can highlight aviation-related activities in a light-hearted manner. This incident underscores the blend of skill and creativity required in aviation, especially in non-commercial test flights. While the pilot’s actions were unconventional, they brought attention to the operational protocols of flight testing, which typically require adherence to strict guidelines. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining safety and professionalism in aviation while also allowing for moments of levity.
