What You Need to Know
• Authorities in southern China reported 39 fatalities due to flooding caused by Tropical Storm Maysak.
• The city of Hengzhou experienced the most casualties, with 26 people dead from a dam collapse.
• Typhoon Bavi is expected to make landfall in China’s Fujian or Zhejiang province on Saturday.

Authorities in southern China announced that 39 people have died due to flooding following heavy rainfall from Tropical Storm Maysak. Most of the fatalities occurred in Hengzhou, where the partial collapse of a reservoir dam resulted in 26 deaths, according to Ding Wei, the Vice Mayor of Nanning city. The storm brought record rainfall to the Guangxi region, leading to breached reservoirs and people being stranded in their homes. Additionally, Typhoon Bavi is currently tracking northwest over the sea and is anticipated to impact Taiwan before making landfall in Fujian or Zhejiang provinces in China on Saturday. As a precaution, fishing boats in northern Taiwan have been secured in anticipation of severe weather.

Why It Matters

This situation highlights the severe impact of tropical storms in southern China, particularly in vulnerable areas like Guangxi. The region has faced significant flooding, exacerbated by infrastructure failures such as the dam collapse in Hengzhou. Tropical Storm Maysak and Typhoon Bavi are part of a broader pattern of increasingly intense weather events in East Asia, raising concerns about climate change and disaster preparedness. Historical data indicates that such storms have caused substantial damage and loss of life in the past, emphasizing the need for effective emergency response strategies.
