What You Need to Know
• German federal prosecutors have charged a 50-year-old Ukrainian national, Serhii K, with pipeline sabotage.
• The Nord Stream pipelines were severely damaged by explosions in September 2022, disrupting gas supplies to Europe.
• Prosecutors allege Serhii K coordinated a team using a yacht to plant explosives near Denmark’s Bornholm Island.

German federal prosecutors have charged Serhii K, a 50-year-old Ukrainian national, in connection with the explosions that destroyed two Nord Stream underwater gas pipelines in September 2022. The explosions rendered both Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 inoperable, halting gas transport from Russia to Europe for several months following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. According to court documents, Serhii K is accused of coordinating a team that used the sailing yacht Andromeda to place explosives on the pipelines. He was arrested in August 2025 in Italy and extradited to Germany in November 2025, where he was previously identified as Serhii Kuznietsov. His defense claims he was in Ukraine at the time of the incident, asserting that he has “functional immunity” under international law.

Why It Matters

The sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines is significant due to its impact on European energy security amid ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine. The pipelines were crucial for transporting Russian gas to Europe, and their destruction has exacerbated energy shortages in the region. The charges against Serhii K highlight the complexities of international law and military operations, particularly regarding the use of civilian infrastructure in conflicts. This case underscores the broader geopolitical ramifications of the war in Ukraine and the ongoing scrutiny of actions taken by individuals in conflict zones.
