High-grade clay-hosted rare earths discovered near Esperance

Terrain Minerals has announced significant findings from its Lort River project, located 50 kilometers northwest of Esperance in Western Australia. Recent aircore drilling revealed anomalous rare earth mineralization in 71 percent of the 35 holes tested, with one hole yielding an impressive 8 meters at 3349 parts per million (ppm) total rare earth oxides (TREO) from a depth of 27 meters. Notably, heavy rare earth oxides (HREO) comprised 33 percent of this interval, highlighting the area’s potential for high-value elements like dysprosium and terbium, which are crucial for manufacturing permanent magnets. The drilling program, which explored a 66-square-kilometer basin, confirmed a broad system of rare earths, with multiple other holes also indicating mineralization. Terrain is preparing for further reverse-circulation drilling to better define the extent of the mineralization and is conducting metallurgical tests to develop an effective processing method.

Why It Matters

The emergence of a rare earth mineralized system at Lort River is significant due to the critical role of rare earth elements in various high-demand technologies, including electric vehicles and renewable energy solutions. Australia has historically been a major player in the rare earth sector, but recent geopolitical tensions and supply chain concerns have heightened the importance of local production. Heavy rare earth elements are particularly scarce outside of China, making discoveries like those at Lort River vital for securing a domestic supply. Furthermore, the successful identification of clay-hosted rare earth deposits could position Terrain Minerals favorably in the rapidly growing global market for these essential materials.
