Major-General Feroz Khan, the head of Crime Intelligence in South Africa, survived an assassination attempt on Sunday night. Khan was shot around 11 PM in Houghton by gunmen who approached him in a white Mercedes-Benz. He was immediately taken to the hospital for emergency surgery and is currently recovering. The Gauteng Hawks, along with crime intelligence and SAPS Detective Service, are conducting an investigation into the shooting. While there is public speculation regarding the motive, police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe emphasized that it is too early to draw conclusions, and the investigation will follow the evidence. The Political Killings Task Team has been tasked with assisting in the case, and the acting national commissioner condemned the attack as a serious threat to judicial processes.

Why It Matters

This incident raises significant concerns about the safety of officials involved in high-profile judicial processes in South Africa. Major-General Khan was scheduled to testify before the Madlanga Commission, which investigates issues related to state capture and corruption. The increasing violence against public officials reflects a broader trend of intimidation and threats facing those engaged in law enforcement and judicial activities in the country. Past incidents have underscored the risks associated with political involvement in South Africa, where political killings and attacks on law enforcement have been documented as serious issues in the ongoing struggle for justice and accountability.
