South Korea to train military personnel in drone operations

South Korea has announced plans to train all 500,000 members of its military to operate drones as easily as they handle personal firearms. This initiative aims to transform drones into a “universal combat tool” for troops, according to Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back. The military is also looking to equip units with more affordable, expendable drones for surveillance and attack missions, alongside developing counter-drone technologies such as lasers and microwave weapons. Additionally, the reorganization of the former drone operations command will emphasize collaboration with the domestic industry for the development of commercial drone technology. These changes are motivated by recent conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, highlighting the importance of drone technology in modern warfare.

Why It Matters

The focus on drone training and technology in South Korea is a response to ongoing tensions with North Korea, which has a significantly larger military presence. Historically, South Korea has maintained a strong military posture due to its 70-year conflict with the North. The integration of drones into military operations reflects a broader global trend toward advanced warfare capabilities, as seen in recent conflicts. By enhancing its drone capabilities, South Korea aims to ensure strategic advantages in surveillance and combat, thereby reinforcing its defense posture in the region.
