Chris Oldnall and Peet Crowther completed a groundbreaking double crossing of False Bay, swimming a total of 78 kilometers over 29 hours to raise funds for underprivileged children to attend Pretoria Boys High School. This swim, which took place on May 14, 2023, was part of a trilogy of open-water swims aimed at supporting educational opportunities for talented youth. The duo has raised approximately R4 million, benefiting 55 students. During the swim, Oldnall faced significant challenges, including severe nausea and vomiting, but persevered with Crowther’s support. Their journey not only showcased their endurance and commitment but also highlighted the importance of access to education for disadvantaged children.

Why It Matters

Open-water swimming events like this one are significant for raising awareness and funding for educational initiatives, particularly in underprivileged communities. Pretoria Boys High School has a long-standing reputation for academic excellence, and initiatives to support talented students from diverse backgrounds can help bridge educational disparities. The success of Oldnall and Crowther’s endeavor reflects the growing trend of using athletic challenges to drive social change and mobilize community support. Their achievement marks a historical milestone in the realm of open-water swimming, demonstrating how sports can be leveraged for philanthropic purposes.
