Caution Urged Along Bow River as Water Levels Rise

It will be a rainy weekend for southern Alberta, with warnings about elevated water levels in the Bow River and possible flooding in Banff National Park. Thunderstorms are expected Saturday night, followed by heavier rainfall from Sunday through Tuesday, leading to temperature drops. Calgary may receive between 50 to 75 millimeters of rain, while areas west of the city could see over 100 millimeters. A high stream-flow advisory has been issued for the Bow River, where water levels are currently more than double the normal rate due to recent warm weather and melt from the snowpack. The RCMP warns of potential “nuisance flooding” that could affect trails, urging caution near rivers.

Why It Matters

The current situation in southern Alberta highlights the impact of recent weather patterns, with the Bow River’s flow reaching 300 cubic meters per second, significantly higher than average levels for this time of year. Historical data indicates that the river’s flow was over 430 cubic meters per second during the catastrophic flooding of 2013. While major flooding is not anticipated this time, the increased flow and the potential for rain demonstrate the ongoing challenges of managing high water levels in the region. Communities are reminded to remain vigilant and prepared for changing conditions, particularly in relation to safety near bodies of water.
