A man in his 40s, who had escaped from a prison van, was struck and killed by a train near Welwyn North railway station in Hertfordshire on May 28, 2026. The incident occurred shortly after 9 am when the prisoner managed to flee from the custody vehicle on the hard shoulder of the A1(M). Following an area search, British Transport Police were alerted to a casualty on the tracks at approximately 9:40 am, where the man was later found dead. Two security guards from the transport contractor were injured during the escape and were subsequently taken to the hospital. While formal identification of the deceased has not been completed, his family has been informed, and a report has been prepared for the coroner. The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct as a procedural requirement.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights the risks associated with transporting prisoners and the protocols in place to ensure safety. Escapes from custody can lead to serious outcomes, not only for the individuals involved but also for public safety and law enforcement resources. The involvement of multiple police agencies, including the British Transport Police, underscores the complexities of managing such incidents. Additionally, the referral of the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct indicates a commitment to transparency and accountability in policing practices.
