Pope calls for regulation of AI to prevent harm and exclusion

Pope Leo XIV, in his inaugural encyclical “Magnifica Humanitas,” called for the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) to prevent the rise of “new forms of slavery.” He emphasized that AI data ownership should not remain in private hands and urged policymakers to protect workers’ rights and children’s safety. Highlighting the dangers of AI-directed weaponry, Leo stated that moral decision-making in warfare cannot be entrusted to algorithms, deeming the existing “just war” theory outdated.
