Iran loses approximately 2 million jobs during internet blackout

Iran’s ongoing economic crisis, exacerbated by wartime conditions and an extended internet blackout, has led to widespread job losses across various sectors. Iranian officials estimate that over two million people have been rendered unemployed, either directly or indirectly, as businesses struggle to cope with the fallout from the conflict, sanctions, and infrastructure damage. The Deputy Labor Minister, Gholamhossein Mohammadi, reported that more than one million jobs have already been lost due to these challenges. Industries such as manufacturing, steel, petrochemicals, and technology are particularly affected, with some companies halting operations entirely. The internet blackout, now in its fourth month, has been estimated to cost the Iranian economy up to $80 million daily, crippling many businesses reliant on online services.

Why It Matters

The situation in Iran highlights the severe economic repercussions of ongoing conflict and government-imposed restrictions. The country was already grappling with economic difficulties before the current crisis, facing a range of issues that included high inflation and unemployment. With significant sectors of the economy, such as technology and manufacturing, unable to function properly, the potential for long-term economic decline increases. As many as 3.5 million jobs in the industrial sector could be at risk if current trends continue, emphasizing the urgent need for a resolution to the ongoing crisis and for restoring normalcy to business operations.
