Woman uses bees to deter police during friend’s eviction

A Massachusetts woman, Rebecca Woods, was found guilty of multiple assault charges after releasing a swarm of bees on police officers during an eviction attempt. The incident occurred on October 12, 2022, when officers were serving eviction papers to Alton King Jr., 80, at his Longmeadow home. Woods, 55, drove a truck loaded with beehives to the scene and unleashed thousands of bees to disrupt the eviction process. She was captured on video as she smashed open hive boxes and donned a beekeeper suit to release more bees, resulting in several officers being stung, with one requiring hospitalization. On April 17, 2023, Woods was sentenced to six months in jail after being convicted of four counts of simple assault and battery and two counts of reckless assault.

Why It Matters

This case highlights the increasing tensions surrounding eviction processes in the U.S., where many individuals face housing insecurity. Woods was attempting to prevent her friend and former roommate’s eviction from a mansion worth $1.9 million, illustrating the complexities of such legal battles. Eviction-related incidents can escalate dangerously, as seen in this case, where both law enforcement and community members were put at risk. The response from the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes the unpredictable nature of their duties and the need for safe execution of eviction orders.
