Increased federal funding for safeguarding Canada’s Jewish community welcomed by CIJA

The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) has welcomed a significant increase in funding from the Canada Community Security Program, with allocations more than doubling from $60 million to $135 million over five years. This funding is aimed at enhancing security measures for Jewish communities across Canada, especially in light of recent attacks, such as the shooting at Temple Emanu-El in Toronto in March. CIJA CEO Noah Shack emphasized the importance of this funding for safeguarding Canadian Jews, particularly as threats have escalated following the Hamas-led massacre on October 7. The federal program supports security upgrades, guard funding, and emergency training, with Shack highlighting that rising security demands are straining community resources. A recent letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney estimated annual security expenses for Jewish communities could reach $100 million, endorsed by over 80 Jewish organizations.

Why It Matters

The increase in funding for Jewish community security in Canada is significant due to the rising incidents of antisemitism and violence against these communities. Historical data shows that antisemitic attacks have surged in various parts of the world, including Canada, prompting calls for enhanced protective measures. The CIJA’s advocacy illustrates a growing recognition of the need for governmental support in addressing these security challenges. In comparison, per capita investment in Jewish community security in Canada is notably lower than in the United Kingdom and Australia, highlighting the disparities in funding for community protection.
