A vibrant display of giant, inflatable lanterns has transformed Subiaco’s Market Square Park as part of the annual Subi Blooms festival, coinciding with Mother’s Day weekend. The new installation, titled “The Light Within,” was unveiled on Thursday and will be open to the public each evening until May 10. Created by prominent Australian artist Matthew Aberline, this exhibition aims to inspire a sense of wonder and joy, encouraging visitors to disconnect from screens and immerse themselves in the colorful environment. Now in its eighth year, the festival features 18 large-scale botanical installations, with floral designs led by Bryce Heyworth of Sydney’s September Studio and local floral studio Fox & Rabbit. Attendees can explore a floral trail featuring various themed installations throughout Subiaco.

Why It Matters

The Subi Blooms festival has become a significant cultural event since its inception, attracting tens of thousands of visitors annually and promoting community engagement through art and nature. The festival not only supports local artists and florists but also emphasizes the importance of outdoor experiences in urban settings. By integrating large-scale art installations into public spaces, the festival enhances the local ecosystem and encourages tourism, contributing to the economic vitality of the area. Events like Subi Blooms foster community spirit and highlight the creative capabilities of the region.
