Screams echoed along the summit track of Taranaki Maunga when several large rocks began to tumble down the mountain. Christoph Heinrich Huelsmann, an experienced tramper from Lower Hutt, was in the path of one of the falling boulders. His partner, Esther Feldmann, shouted a warning, prompting Huelsmann to run for safety. Unfortunately, he was struck by a rock and fell approximately 20 meters, coming to rest about 10 meters from Feldmann.
