41% of Canadians support doctors refusing MAID for religious reasons

A recent poll by ResearchCo has highlighted a significant divide among Canadians regarding Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID). The survey revealed that 41% of Canadians believe health-care professionals should be allowed to refuse to provide MAID services based on moral or religious objections, while 42% disagree, and 17% are uncertain. This represents a 5-point increase in support for the right to decline from a similar survey conducted in November 2022. Opposition is notably high in Alberta (47%) and among Canadians aged 55 and older (45%). Provincial guidelines require practitioners who object to MAID to refer patients to other providers. The federal government emphasizes that it is up to provincial and territorial jurisdictions to determine how MAID is implemented, with many institutions, including some religious-run facilities, opting not to provide these services. This situation often necessitates patient transfers, which can be detrimental to those in fragile health.

Why It Matters

The debate over MAID in Canada reflects broader societal and ethical issues surrounding end-of-life care. As the legislation has evolved since its introduction in 2016, discussions have intensified about expanding eligibility, including potential provisions for individuals with mental health conditions. The evolving landscape of health-care regulations and public sentiment regarding conscientious objection in medical practice raises critical questions about patient access to care and the balance between individual rights and professional obligations. Understanding these dynamics is essential, as they impact not only legislative outcomes but also the experiences of patients and health-care providers across the country.
