Microsoft removes Copilot buttons from Windows 11 applications

Microsoft has begun the process of removing “unnecessary” Copilot buttons from its Windows 11 applications as part of an effort to streamline user experience. In the latest update for the Notepad app available to Windows Insiders, the Copilot button has been replaced with a “writing tools” menu that still features AI-powered capabilities. Similarly, the Snipping Tool has eliminated the Copilot button during the area selection process. This initiative is part of a broader strategy by Microsoft to reduce clutter in applications like Snipping Tool, Photos, Widgets, and Notepad. While the Copilot branding is being removed, the underlying AI features will remain accessible to users.

Why It Matters

This change reflects Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to enhance the usability of Windows 11 by removing redundant features that may confuse users. The Copilot functionality was initially introduced to integrate AI tools into everyday applications, but feedback indicated that these buttons were often unnecessary. By focusing on essential features and simplifying user interfaces, Microsoft aims to improve overall user satisfaction. This is particularly relevant as the company seeks to refine Windows 11 following mixed reactions since its launch in 2021, where users have often criticized excessive bloat and complexity in the operating system.
