United Airlines increases baggage fees, following another U.S. carrier

United Airlines announced an increase in fees for first and second checked bags, marking it as the second U.S. airline to do so this week. Effective immediately for flights within the U.S., Mexico, Canada, and Latin America, the cost for the first checked bag will rise by $10 to $45 for those who pay in advance and to $50 for last-minute check-ins. The fee for a second checked bag will increase to $55 for pre-paid passengers and $60 for those checking within 24 hours of the flight. This price adjustment does not affect customers who purchased tickets before April 3. Notably, certain groups, including United Chase credit card holders and MileagePlus Premier members, will still be able to check a bag for free. The fare hikes come amid rising operational costs influenced by escalating fuel prices due to geopolitical tensions.

Why It Matters

The increase in checked bag fees reflects ongoing challenges faced by airlines as they navigate rising fuel costs, which have been particularly volatile due to the conflict in the Middle East. Recent disruptions in oil supply, exacerbated by geopolitical events, have led to significant increases in crude oil prices, with Brent crude rising 7.7% to $109 per barrel. Additionally, airline fares have surged by 15% to 20% over the past month, indicating that increased operational costs are being passed on to consumers. These trends highlight the broader economic pressures within the airline industry and the impact of external factors on travel costs.
