Russia launches nearly 400 drones at Ukraine amid spring offensive

A significant Russian drone and missile strike on Ukraine resulted in four fatalities and injured at least 27 people, according to officials. Overnight, Russia launched nearly 400 long-range drones, marking its largest attack in weeks, with many targeting the capital, Kyiv. Additionally, 23 cruise missiles and seven ballistic missiles were fired at various locations across the country, hitting at least ten sites. The intensified assault coincides with an increase in Russian military activity along the 1,250-kilometer frontline, as Ukrainian forces prepare for a possible new offensive. The Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s armed forces reported that Russian troops have attempted to breach defensive lines in multiple areas, with heavy fighting recorded in recent days.

Why It Matters

This escalation reflects a broader trend in the ongoing conflict, which has persisted since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine over four years ago. The Institute for the Study of War indicates that Russia’s current actions align with the start of its spring-summer offensive. As of now, Russia occupies approximately 20% of Ukraine, including Crimea, which it annexed in 2014. The continuous military exchanges underscore the challenges for Ukrainian forces, which are adapting by enhancing their drone capabilities amidst a shortage of infantry. The international community, while focused on other conflicts, remains crucial in addressing the humanitarian and military implications of this war.
