The US military announced that it attacked a suspected drug trafficking vessel in the eastern Pacific, initially reporting three survivors, but only one was recovered alive. The strike, part of Operation Southern Spear targeting drug trafficking boats, has led to the deaths of at least 159 individuals in 46 incidents since September 2, 2025.

Why It Matters

The lethal campaign against alleged drug trafficking vessels in Latin America has raised concerns about extrajudicial killings and potential prosecution for those involved. The lack of transparency regarding the justification for these attacks, as well as the identities of those killed, has sparked criticism and calls for accountability. The latest incident underscores the ongoing controversy surrounding the US military’s tactics in combating drug trafficking in the region.
