Legendary Tacoma football coach dies at 89

Jack Sonntag, the former head coach of the 1975 Foss football team, passed away on March 4, 2026, at the age of 89. Sonntag led the Falcons to a Class 4A state championship and was known for his no-nonsense coaching style and dedication to teaching life lessons. He influenced many young athletes, including standout player Keith Brown, who credited Sonntag with instilling a strong work ethic and teamwork. A memorial service will be held on March 28 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Tacoma.
