Milan prosecutors are seeking to put Amazon’s European unit and four of its managers on trial for alleged tax evasion amounting to approximately $1.38 billion. This unprecedented move follows a previous settlement in December, where Amazon paid 527 million euros to Italy’s Revenue Agency. Prosecutors accuse the company of facilitating VAT evasion through a “VAT-avoidance algorithm” that allowed non-EU sellers to operate without disclosing their identities, thus avoiding value-added tax.
