Canada’s independent auto repair shops are urging the government to strengthen right-to-repair legislation, claiming that access to proprietary vehicle data could save drivers up to $500 annually. The Automotive Industries Association highlights that manufacturers use digital locks to limit access to essential repair information, forcing consumers to pay higher dealership prices. Although Parliament passed two bills in 2024 to allow independent shops to bypass these locks, they lack enforcement measures on manufacturers to share data. Experts warn that trade tensions and the introduction of Chinese electric vehicles could complicate repair access further.
