Russia’s Information Campaign Against Canada Gains Effectiveness

OTTAWA — Nathalie Drouin, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s outgoing national security and intelligence advisor, expressed concern over Russia’s successful disinformation efforts in Canada, leading many to mistakenly believe Ukraine initiated the conflict following Russia’s 2022 invasion. During her testimony on foreign interference in elections, she confirmed the last election was fair but acknowledged attempts at interference from both China and potentially the U.S. Drouin emphasized ongoing monitoring of foreign influences and advocated for adding a non-government member to a panel assessing interference risks for future elections. She has been appointed as Canada’s next ambassador to France.
