Auckland couple sentenced for receiving $158,000 in transfer error

An Auckland couple, Senia Filipo and Alexander Saumani Afaese Filipo, received $158,000 due to a bank transfer error, which they initially believed to be gambling winnings. However, after transferring most of the funds out quickly to pay bills and support family, a judge deemed their explanation implausible. Senia pleaded guilty to theft, while Alexander admitted to receiving $64,000 of the victim’s money. They were sentenced to six months of community detention following the incident linked to a mistake by pensioner Andrew Che Sit Bong.
