The EU has activated parts of its secure satellite communications network for the first time, part of a €10.6 billion initiative to reduce reliance on US support amid rising tensions. The GOVSATCOM program utilizes capacity from eight operational satellites across several member states, aiming to provide sovereign and secure communications for military and government use. By 2029, it will integrate with the IRIS2 satellite constellation to enhance connectivity and security for all member states. EU Defense and Space Commissioner Andrius Kubilius emphasized the goal of ensuring European control over this infrastructure.
