Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), has decided not to investigate allegations made by lawyer Sudine Riley, who claims multiple Durham Regional Police Service officers assaulted her at the Oshawa courthouse. The SIU stated its investigative jurisdiction is limited to serious injuries or deaths, which Riley’s case did not meet. Riley alleges officers slammed her head on a desk and dragged her, resulting in injuries. The Durham police are reviewing evidence and have reassigned the involved officers while maintaining an ongoing investigation.
