Surfer bitten by shark in Northern California Shark snaps surfboard during incident

A surfer named Tommy Civik was bitten by a shark in Mendocino County, Northern California, breaking his board in the first shark incident of the year. Civik described the impact as feeling “like being hit by a car,” and although he did not see the shark, he required stitches for his injuries. His friend, Marco Guerrero, initially mistook the thrashing for a seal being attacked. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is using DNA from Civik’s wound to identify the shark species involved.
