The Philippines and Japan signed two defense pacts, including a deal for tax-free supply exchanges during joint military training, amid rising tensions with China.
Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and Philippine Foreign Secretary Theresa Lazaro announced these agreements, which aim to enhance military cooperation and readiness. The pacts include a $6 million security assistance package from Japan to bolster the Philippines’ naval capabilities. Both countries reiterated their commitment to oppose unilateral changes in the status quo in the South China Sea, indirectly addressing China’s assertiveness.
