Both GNOME and Firefox are contemplating disabling the middle-click paste feature by default, citing its confusing nature and potential for accidental pasting. A GNOME merge request suggests that this functionality, seen as an “X11’ism,” could be switched off, although users could restore it via a specific command. The decision is now with GNOME’s design team. Similarly, Mozilla is exploring options for disabling this feature at the GTK toolkit or Wayland compositor level.
