Pope Leo XIV Calls for Peace in New Year’s Address

Pope Leo XIV welcomed the new year with a call for peace during his first Angelus address of 2026, urging global rejection of violence and commitment to reconciliation. Speaking to around 40,000 attendees in St. Peter’s Square, he emphasized that true peace comes from God and requires personal transformation. Highlighting ongoing peace efforts, he encouraged all to start building a year of peace and entrusted the new year to Mary, the Mother of God. The address coincided with the World Day of Peace, marked since 1968.
