Search and rescue teams spent 12 hours rescuing an 80-year-old man who collapsed on a challenging trail in the Coromandel after running out of water. The operation took place in the Kauaeranga Valley, where social media hailed the rescuers as “heroes” for their efforts in harsh conditions. The elderly hiker was first aided by a mother and her children, who formed a human heat circle to keep him warm. Images captured the man being transported on a stretcher through dense terrain.
