British Activist Returns to UK After Time in Egyptian Prison
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Alaa Abd El-Fattah, a British-Egyptian pro-democracy activist who spent over a decade in Egyptian prisons, was pardoned by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and released in September 2025. Alaa’s detention, widely criticized as a violation of international law, became emblematic of Egypt’s declining democratic freedoms. While his release is celebrated, many other political prisoners remain incarcerated.
