Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund, Danantara Indonesia, made its first overseas investment by acquiring the 1,461-room Novotel Makkah Thakher City and adjacent land in Mecca, marking a significant entry into the hospitality sector aimed at supporting Indonesian pilgrims. Launched in February 2025 with $20 billion in initial capital, Danantara has attracted notable investments from Gulf nations, including a $10 billion renewable energy commitment from Saudi Arabia and a $4 billion fund with Qatar. This strategic investment in Mecca not only aligns with Indonesia’s pilgrimage needs but also positions Danantara as a peer within the global sovereign capital ecosystem, fostering deeper ties with Middle Eastern investors. The acquisition reflects a broader ambition to enhance Indonesia’s economic presence and cooperation in the region.
