Egypt requests complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has reiterated Egypt’s commitment to supporting Lebanon, urging for the immediate and complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from all Lebanese territory. During a phone call with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Abdelatty emphasized that any infringement on Lebanon’s sovereignty is a violation of international law and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. He also expressed Egypt’s solidarity with Lebanon in facing its current security and political challenges. Additionally, Abdelatty highlighted the necessity of strengthening Lebanese state institutions, particularly the Lebanese Armed Forces, to ensure they can maintain authority across the country. He underscored that the Lebanese state must hold a monopoly on the use of force to safeguard security, stability, and the interests of the Lebanese people.

Why It Matters

This statement from Egypt comes amidst ongoing regional tensions and conflicts involving Israel and Lebanon. UN Security Council Resolution 1701 was established in 2006 to resolve hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, reinforcing Lebanon’s sovereignty. The Lebanese Armed Forces have historically struggled with challenges to their authority, particularly from non-state actors like Hezbollah. Strengthening state institutions is critical for Lebanon to manage security effectively and protect its territorial integrity, which has been compromised by external interventions and internal divisions. Egypt’s involvement in advocating for Lebanon’s sovereignty reflects its broader regional role in promoting stability and addressing security concerns in the Middle East.
