Lottery jackpots have significantly increased, with Powerball’s largest prize reaching $2.04 billion in November 2022 and Mega Millions’ record at $1.602 billion in August 2023. Since 2023, 12 of the largest 20 jackpots have occurred, while the odds of winning remain extremely low despite multiple game redesigns. Changes have improved overall winning odds and increased ticket prices, with Powerball tickets rising to $2 in 2012 and Mega Millions to $5 in 2023. Only five states do not sell lottery tickets: Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah.
