The New York Times reported on December 7 that despite damage from Russian drones earlier in the year, radiation levels at Chernobyl remain unchanged. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that the protective structure lost its primary safety functions due to a fire but sustained no permanent damage to load-bearing structures. Limited repairs have been conducted, but comprehensive restoration is necessary for long-term safety. The shield, completed in 2019, is vital for securing the site and cost €2.1 billion to build.
