UPS and FedEx are grounding their fleets of McDonnell Douglas MD-11 planes following a deadly crash at UPS Worldport in Louisville, Kentucky, that killed 14 people, including three pilots. The aircraft, which was modified from a 1991 model, is integral to both companies’ operations, making up 9% of UPS’s and 4% of FedEx’s fleets. Investigators are looking into the circumstances surrounding the crash, which involved an engine fire seconds after takeoff, and the cockpit voice recorder will take months to analyze. Operations at the UPS hub resumed shortly after the incident, which caused significant chaos and damage to nearby businesses.
