National Guard troops will arrive in New Orleans before the end of November to assist with security during major events, including the Bayou Classic and New Year’s celebrations, as part of a collaborative effort with local police, according to Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick. Despite ongoing crime reductions, the NOPD is currently understaffed, needing around 300 more officers, but Kirkpatrick emphasized that the Guard’s role is to support law enforcement, not replace it.
