Military Unit Takes Control in Madagascar

An elite military unit, CAPSAT, has taken control of Madagascar from President Andry Rajoelina amid youth-led protests over water and power shortages, with celebrations erupting in the capital, Antananarivo. Col Michael Randrianirina announced plans for a new government and elections within two years, while Rajoelina, currently in a “safe place,” claims to have survived an assassination attempt.
