US Senate initiates recognition of Palestinian State

For the first time, Democratic senators, led by Jeff Merkley, introduced a non-binding bill in the U.S. Senate urging President Trump to recognize a demilitarized Palestinian state, though its passage is unlikely due to Republican control and opposition to the two-state solution. The five signing senators aim to send a message ahead of the UN General Assembly and increase pressure on the U.S. administration to assist Gaza.
