Ottawa seeks limits on Quebec’s secularism law use

The federal government is advocating for limits on the notwithstanding clause of the Charter of Rights, which Quebec has used to protect its secularism law, Bill 21, from judicial review. This proposal, presented in a Supreme Court challenge, aims to prevent the clause from irreversibly impairing Charter rights, positioning Ottawa against Quebec, Ontario, and Alberta, who oppose such restrictions.
