HM Revenue & Customs hit by phishing attack

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) reported that a phishing attack last year affected around 100,000 UK taxpayers’ online accounts, with the incident disclosed during a House of Commons Treasury select committee meeting. HMRC’s new chief executive, John-Paul Marks, stated that the attack, attributed to organized crime, aimed to obtain identity data but resulted in no financial loss for the affected individuals. The agency has since secured the compromised accounts and assured that taxpayers do not need to take any further action.
