US offers $10 million reward for information on militia leader

The US State Department has announced a $10 million reward for information that helps locate Akram ‘Abbas al-Kabi, the leader of the Iran-aligned militia group Harakat al-Nujaba (HAN) in Iraq. Al-Kabi has been implicated in attacks on US diplomatic facilities and military bases in Iraq and Syria, resulting in casualties among US personnel. The State Department designated al-Kabi and HAN as Specially Designated Global Terrorists in 2019. This announcement follows recent US Treasury sanctions imposed on multiple commanders from various Iran-backed groups. The US government has stated that HAN has pledged loyalty to Iran and has received military and logistical support from Tehran, highlighting its ties to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force.

Why It Matters

The designation and reward reflect ongoing US efforts to counter Iran’s influence in Iraq and the activities of its proxy militias. Harakat al-Nujaba has a history of violent actions against US interests, which exacerbates tensions in a region already fraught with conflict. The group’s allegiance to Iran and its connections to key Iranian military figures underscore the broader geopolitical struggle between the US and Iran in the Middle East. The US’s approach, including sanctions and rewards for information, is part of a strategy aimed at diminishing the operational capabilities of these Iran-aligned groups.
