UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed alarm over the rising risk of famine in the Gaza Strip, with nearly 470,000 people facing “catastrophic hunger” due to Israel’s nine-week aid blockade. According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification System, one in five Gazans is experiencing starvation, and urgent treatment is needed for 71,000 children and over 17,000 mothers suffering from acute malnutrition. Guterres emphasized that this crisis is a human-made catastrophe, urging for the opening of Gaza to allow essential aid to reach those in need.
