Lebanon death toll exceeds 2,600 since March 2 Israeli offensive

The death toll from Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon since March 2 has risen to 2,618, with 8,094 individuals reported injured, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. In the last 24 hours alone, 32 people were killed and 74 others injured due to Israeli raids. The attacks have escalated following Hezbollah’s retaliation related to the Iran conflict, resulting in the displacement of over 1 million people. While a 10-day ceasefire initiated on April 17 was later extended until May 17, Israel has continued to violate it through ongoing airstrikes and the demolition of homes. Additionally, Israel maintains a “buffer zone” in southern Lebanon to prevent attacks from Hezbollah, following a previous truce agreed upon in November 2024.

Why It Matters

The ongoing conflict has significant humanitarian implications, particularly as over 1 million people have been displaced amid escalating violence. The situation is further complicated by historical tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, as well as the broader regional dynamics influenced by Iran. The sustained violence and ceasefire violations hinder peace efforts and exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, where access to essential services is increasingly strained. Understanding the impact of these events is crucial for comprehending the long-standing conflict and the current geopolitical landscape in the region.
