Netflix’s New Film Strategy: More About the Audience, Less About Auteurs
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In around 2019, when a filmmaker inked a deal with Netflix, it typically meant a generous paycheck and creative autonomy. The emphasis was on reaching the streaming platform’s vast subscriber base rather than a traditional theatrical release. However, those days are now a thing of the past.

Dan Lin took over as Netflix’s new film chief on April 1 and wasted no time in implementing changes. He restructured the film department, focusing on genres rather than budget levels, and emphasized producing a wider range of films to cater to Netflix’s diverse subscriber base of 260 million. Additionally, Lin aims to enhance the quality of movies while adjusting talent payment structures to eliminate large upfront deals.

Netflix’s era of financial restraint is well underway, with a shift in focus towards improving film quality, reducing costs, and less frequent releases. The company has refrained from commenting on these developments.

As Netflix solidifies its position as a dominant streaming platform, the need to attract A-list filmmakers with exorbitant budgets has diminished. Furthermore, major studios are increasingly allowing their films to appear on Netflix shortly after theatrical release, adding to the platform’s content library. Notably, the top 10 most-watched English-language films on Netflix included six produced externally.

Under Lin’s leadership, Netflix aims to produce better quality films across different budget levels to appeal to a broader audience. The company’s shift towards a more economical approach has raised concerns among Hollywood producers and agents about Netflix’s viability as a distribution partner.

High-profile filmmakers who previously worked with Netflix have moved on to other projects, signaling a changing landscape. Lin’s strategy focuses on developing original content and fostering a more proactive approach within the film department to ensure better film quality.

Despite internal changes, Netflix’s reluctance to prioritize theatrical releases remains a point of contention within the creative community and theater owners.

Many in the industry are hopeful for Netflix’s renewed focus under Lin’s leadership, anticipating a shift towards greenlighting films that traditional studios may overlook. The goal is to provide a platform for a wider variety of films in Hollywood’s evolving landscape.
