A Hong Kong national, referred to as “AJ,” has been ordered to return to Hong Kong after injuring his pet cat, which suffered 13 fractures during an attempted toilet training and showering process. Despite appealing on humanitarian grounds, the New Zealand Immigration and Protection Tribunal found no exceptional circumstances to permit him to remain, noting his community ties but deeming the challenges of returning to Hong Kong manageable. The man’s mental health and autism diagnosis were cited as factors in his failure to recognize the harm caused to the cat, leading to his conviction on an animal welfare charge and subsequent deportation notice.
