Ottawa has granted Campobello Island residents a tariff reprieve, exempting them from Canadian counter-tariffs on consumer and household products if they were in the U.S. for less than 24 hours. This exemption, the first since the start of the global trade war, was announced by Minister of Finance François-Philippe Champagne and is in recognition of the island’s unique situation. Premier Susan Holt welcomed the move, emphasizing the importance of exemptions for specific situations while noting that Campobello residents are now receiving a break.
